Welcome. It is my sincere hope that you will find this site a useful resource to learn more about prostate cancer and its treatment. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men other than skin cancer, and the second most common cause of cancer death. It can adversely affect the quality of your life as well. My goal with this site is to reassure you and your family that when detected early, this is a solvable problem. Furthermore, the adverse impact on quality of life issues can be minimized by using robotic technology.
I want you to understand how management decisions for prostate cancer are made. If surgical management is appropriate for your situation, I want you to understand the goals of surgical management and the details of recovery. I want you to be as informed as possible so that you know what to expect and that your expectations are realistic.
On this site you will find video of the procedure and a patients’ description of the recovery. Instructions for before and after surgery are provided as well. In the Reading Room, I’ve suggested articles for additional reading as well as my own thoughts about current issues such as PSA for prostate cancer screening. There is also an e-mail address if you’d like to ask me questions.
My practice is exclusively devoted to the management of prostate cancer and we will do our best to help you get better.
As a board certified urologist and prostate cancer surgeon, Dr. Jackson has a distinguished career dedicated to the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. He and his professional staff at the Memorial Health Care System have a long and proud history of excellence in world class urological care.
Dr. Jackson has performed over one thousand open prostatectomies and over 1400 robotic prostatectomies using the daVinci surgical system. As the fight against prostate cancer has changed dramatically in recent years, Dr. Jackson has welcomed technology and it's increasingly important role in treatment methodology. Today Dr. Jackson uses the most advanced laparoscopic technology available. The advanced technology used in the technique incorporates the da Vinci® Surgical Robot for the surgical management of localized prostate cancer. For those who are candidates for the surgery, the robot-assisted procedure is less invasive, but equally effective -- with substantial benefits to the patient.
"These benefits allow our patients to return to their normal daily activities faster, with less discomfort and an improved quality of life, which is our mutual goal. Compared with the open prostatectomy, the robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy generally results in:
My use of the da Vinci® Surgical Robot enables me to visualize the procedure far better and attain greater precision than any other laparoscopic approach," says Dr. Jackson.
